panel restoration

Last year I had the honour to restore this door panel for a home in Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders.

It has been restored at least twice previously, with plain glass inserted for the repairs.

The owner requested that I repair the broken pieces as well as switching out some of the previously added glass that didn't match with the rest of the panel.
Luckily I had some textured antique glass recycled from an old door that was a closer match to the original.

Then the hard work began - I had to strip off the disintegrating external lead came and replace this with fresh lead. It was in too bad a condition to reuse due to years of neglect and damage from repainting and varnishing the surrounding door. I had to replace and reinforce the horizontal lead lines using brass bars for added strength.

The lead was soldered, with new cement and whitening applied. The panel was then cleaned and finished with black patina added to the lead lines and grate polish to give it a lovely black finish.
