Full day workshop

create a stained glass panel

Learn to make a stained glass leaded panel approx. 25cm x 25cm square or a 30cm x 20cm rectangle.
You will be able to choose from a range of patterns available that are suitable for absolute beginners.

You will learn to cut glass, stretch, cut and shape the lead. Solder the project together using a soldering iron, then apply cement before it is cleaned and polished. Two day workshop requires standing/sitting for long periods of time, and requires hand strength to stretch and shape the lead.​

Please note this workshop uses sharp glass, chemicals such as flux and patina as well as lead. It is NOT suitable for children under 16 years of age.

Workshop details
WORKSHOP LENGTH
The Leaded Panel workshop is an intensive full day 9am-5pm workshop requires standing/sitting for long periods of time, and requires hand strength to stretch and shape the lead.

It includes a lunch break - please bring a packed lunch or visit one of the local cafes based at Harestanes, there is also the Woodside Garden Centre café near us, as well as the fabulous Ancrum Pantry across the A68 main road in the village of Ancrum that does lovely filled rolls, pastries etc.
Please note workshop times are approximate and class may run longer or shorter.

If time does not allow for panels to be cemented in the time frame - they can can be collected at a later date following the workshop.

WHAT'S INVOLVED
A variety of patterns/designs are available to choose from to create a small leaded panel 25cm square or rectangle. The patterns are suitable for absolute beginners and are achievable in the available time frame of the workshop.

You will have a wide range of colours and types of glass to choose from to create your piece.

You will learn to cut glass, stretch, cut and shape the lead. Solder the project together using a soldering iron, then apply cement before it is cleaned and polished. Intensive full day workshop requires standing/sitting for long periods of time, and requires hand strength to stretch and shape the lead.​

What's included
Light refreshments provided such as tea/coffee/water and biscuits are available throughout the workshop. Please advise of any dietary requirements at the time of booking and we will try to accommodate.

A microwave, fridge and kettle are available to use. Please bring a packed lunch or visit one of the local cafes.


We cannot allow open cups on the bench during glass cutting or working with chemicals. Please ensure to bring a bottle if you would like to leave water on the bench during class.

All glass, tools, equipment and protective gear are provided to allow you to create your own leaded panel.

​WORKSHOP SAFETY EQUIPMENT
We provide all tools, equipment and protective clothing for our workshops. Every effort is made to ensure your safety and comfort during our workshops.
• Disposable gloves are provided to protect your hands from any chemicals that may be used such as Patina or Flux that contain acid during the Stained Glass workshops. Both latex and latex-free gloves are available, please advise if you have a latex allergy upon booking the workshop.
• Heavy gloves are provided to protect your hands from heat during soldering during the Stained Glass workshops, as well as when removing and handling glass from the scrap boxes.
• Safety glasses are provided and should be worn when cutting glass. The safety glasses are oversized so as to fit over the top of regular eye glasses, and have side protection to protect the wearer further in a class situation. Safety glasses must also be worn as when using the glass grinder (Stained Glass only) and when applying finishes such as Patina to prevent chemicals from irritating eyes.
• Dust masks are provided to protect wearer from any fumes created during soldering and when applying whiting powder (on Leaded panel workshop)
• Aprons are provided to protect clothing on all of our workshops.
• Anti-fatigue mats are provided on the floor around the work benches to make standing more comfortable, especially on our more intensive workshops such as the full day Leaded panel workshop.

STAINED GLASS SAFETY
• As the Stained Glass workshops use sharp glass, chemicals such as flux and patina as well as lead, i
t is NOT suitable for children under 16 years of age. If you are on medication such as blood thinners, please seek your Doctor's advice prior to booking.
• Long hair must be tied up when using machines such as the glass grinder or soldering irons on our Stained Glass workshops.
• The Leaded Panel workshop is an intensive full day workshop requires standing/sitting for long periods of time, and requires hand strength to stretch and shape the lead.
•  The Leaded Panel workshop  is traditional stained glass and we use Tallow sticks for soldering, please contact us before the workshop if you are vegetarian/vegan to allow us to provide you with an alternative flux.
• Warm water and soap is provided for hand washing after handling chemicals or lead. It is essential to thoroughly wash hands after handling lead came or lead solder before eating/drinking. Disposable gloves are provided however it is advised to wash hands also.

GENERAL HEALTH & SAFETY
• Harestanes Glass Studio accepts no liability for physical injury of any kind, upon booking onto a workshop you accept the potential risks and dangers involved with glass cutting and soldering (stained glass) and that you are choosing to participate at your own risk.
• Protective safety equipment and clothing as well as safe workshop practice should be followed to prevent and mitigate any potential dangers.
• You may be in a class situation with other individuals depending on class booking numbers, please be considerate to other class participants. You are expected to be sensible and courteous. Any person deemed to be behaving inappropriately or irresponsibly will be asked to leave immediately. No refund will be given in this instance.
• A coat rack has been provided for you to safely store any coats or bags to prevent tripping hazards. Harestanes Glass Studio accepts no liability for loss or damage to personal belongings. They are stored at your own risk.
• Suitable clothing must be worn, preferably long sleeves and no cropped tops.
• Sensible footwear must be worn, no open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops will be allowed in the workshop.
We reserve the right to ask the student to leave the workshop if unsuitable clothing or footwear is worn. No refund will be given in this instance.
• Unfortunately we cannot allow any dogs to accompany you on workshop, cutting glass can create sharp splinters that often fall to the floor making it dangerous.
• Please note we have a log burning stove. We have a fire guard and signage, and we ask students to please keep a safe distance and to remember that the stove is hot to the touch.
• Only sealable bottles of water or juice can be kept on table. Open glasses or cups are too dangerous due to chemicals or shards of glass. Breaks can be taken at any time during workshop to eat or drink, and light refreshments such as tea/coffee/water are provided during breaks.
